Prospect Heights
Ever looked at your butter dish and thought, “Too slow, too regulated?” In this sculptural and functional handbuilding workshop, participants will learn the skills necessary to create a butter-dish in the shape of a car/truck/motorcycle/vehicle from the garage of their imagination. Gracie will provide in-depth demonstrations on how to handbuild a strong, functioning butter dish from grill to tailpipe. This functional form holds a wide array of exciting opportunities: finally owning that classic car you always wanted, a gift for a loved one of their favorite car immortalized to hold butter, a chance to experiment at moding out the vehicle of your dreams. The workshop is open to all skill levels but experience with one previous handbuilding class will be helpful. Through a series of in-depth demonstrations, students will grasp the technical execution of solid building, beginner sculpting, and fine tuning detail, which can be expanded on to remain engaging and exploratory for more advanced students.
The bisque firing of one 6”x4”x5” butter dish will be included in the workshop fee. Students may fire additional pieces by paying via outside firing. Students that wish to glaze fire at the studio may do so by making a glazing appointment.
Based out of Brooklyn, NY, Grace Fossett, is an interdisciplinary artist actively blurring historical boundaries between fine art and craft, by world building narratives through a queer non-binary lens. Dealing in dreams and histories, real and imagined, they are narrator, spiraling storyteller, and subject. Fossett’s work is a playful yet emotionally charged exploration of gender, fantasy, and the relationship with self— familial, platonic, and romantic. It conjures up a dream-like sense in their audience, blending fantasy and humor with poignant resonance.
