This workshop will introduce students to the Kurinuki process of handbuilding including various methods for altering form by reductive carving and sculpting. Kurinuki is a traditional Japanese handbuilding technique which translates to “hollowing out”. Students will begin with a solid piece of clay carving the outside form with the use of carving bows and loop tools. Once the exterior form is finalized the interior will be hollowed out to create a vessel. This is a very hands on and intuitive way of working. No prior ceramic experience is needed.
Nadine Sobel is a ceramic artist from New York. She graduated with a BFA from Alfred NYSCC in 2006. She has been working with clay for over 15 years. Living and working in Brooklyn, she has taught in various studios such as the 92nd St Y, JCC, and BKLYN CLAY.
